Start a new project: the setup wizard
The setup wizard creates a Studio project and starts the keyword research. It has six steps: Type, Business, Start, Media, Plan and Scripts. Only the website type, business name, service and location are required.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- At least 50 Xags (xRenew plus xBanks). With less, Studio shows “Building a site takes more XAGS than you have right now” with a View my plan & top up button instead of the wizard.
- A free project slot. If every slot is in use, Studio shows “Every project slot on your plan is in use”. Archive or delete a project to free a slot. See Project slots.
Open the wizard
Section titled “Open the wizard”- On the Dashboard or All projects, click New project.
- Use Continue and Back to move between steps. The step rail at the top shows where you are.
Step 1: Type
Section titled “Step 1: Type”- Under What kind of website is this?, pick one:
- Real Business: a site for an existing business you own or represent.
- Rank & Rent: a site you build to rank for a service in a location, then rent to a local business.
- Pay Per Lead: a referral site that collects calls and passes them to contractors for a fee per lead.
- Click Continue.
You can’t change the website type after the project exists.
Step 2: Business
Section titled “Step 2: Business”- Enter the Business name. This is required. It names your site and is used to draw your logo.
- Enter the City. Pick a suggestion from the list, or press Enter to use what you typed.
- Fill in any other details you have: Domain, Email, Phone, address, Business hours, License, Insurance, and so on. They are optional and improve the result.
- Click Add more business info to add profile links such as Google Business Profile, Facebook, Yelp or BBB.org.
- Click Continue.
For Real Business sites, Owner, Founding year and Business story are also required. The about section is written from your business story.
Business info is free. Studio uses it on your pages, in your contact details and in your schema.
Step 3: Start
Section titled “Step 3: Start”- Enter the Service, for example “pool cleaning”.
- Enter the Business location, for example “Staten Island”. Pick a suggestion, or press Enter to keep your typed text.
- If the place name matches more than one location, Studio asks which one you mean. Pick one, or choose to keep your text as typed.
- Click Continue.
If you already planned this site in Project Planner, you can upload its CSV export here instead of researching from scratch. See Import a Project Planner CSV into Studio.
Step 4: Media
Section titled “Step 4: Media”This step is optional. Choose a logo, set brand colors, and decide whether Studio creates unique images. See Logos, brand colors, images and business photos.
If you skip it with Let me review the plan, Studio asks for your logo later, before it builds.
Step 5: Plan
Section titled “Step 5: Plan”Answer three questions:
| Question | Options |
|---|---|
| How should we build this? | Build it for me or Let me review the plan (the default). See “Build it for me” vs “Let me review the plan”. |
| How much should we cover? | Just my main service (the default): one focused set of pages. Main + related services: adds pages for services you would usually offer alongside it. |
| How fast do you need competition data? | Standard (the default): ready in about five minutes, uses the least credit. Priority: ready in under a minute, costs several times more credit. |
With Build it for me, you also set Maximum pages to build (1 to 500, default 10). Studio keeps the highest-scoring pages and sets the rest aside.
The speed choice affects only the competition check. It does not change how fast pages are written or built.
Step 6: Scripts
Section titled “Step 6: Scripts”- Optionally paste tracking or verification snippets (Google Search Console, Facebook Pixel, Google Tag Manager and similar).
- Click Plan my site.
Studio adds header scripts to the head of every page exactly as you paste them. Leave the box blank if you have none. Header scripts are free.
If Plan my site is grayed out, the text under it names what is missing, for example “Add your business name to continue.”
What happens next
Section titled “What happens next”Studio shows Planning your project with a live list of steps:
- Confirming your request
- Searching Google for competitors
- Choosing the best competitors
- Finding the keywords they rank for
- Finding search demand
- Finding related services
- Building your keyword list
- Grouping keywords into page topics
When it finishes, Studio shows “Project saved — opening the editor…” and opens your project. See How Studio finds and groups keywords.
What it costs
Section titled “What it costs”Setup and business info are free. The research run charges for the competitor search, keyword mining, search demand, related services (only with Main + related services) and AI grouping. A logo costs Xags only if you generate one. See What a Studio project costs.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| “Building a site takes more XAGS than you have right now” | Top up to at least 50 Xags, then open New project again. |
| “Every project slot on your plan is in use” | Click Manage my projects and archive or delete a project, or upgrade your plan. |
| “Choose which location you mean, or keep it as typed, to continue.” | Pick a location from the list, or keep your typed text. |
| “Our keyword data provider is having trouble right now…” | Nothing was charged and no project was created. Try again in a few minutes. |
| “Your keywords are saved. Try grouping them again…” | Click Try grouping again. You are not charged for the research a second time. |
| “Finished — but no location keywords were found for these competitors.” | Try a broader location or a simpler service term. The project is still created, and you can add keywords by hand. |
