SSL for hosted sites, including fixing a failed install

The setup wizard installs a free SSL certificate when it deploys your site. Sometimes the automatic install fails, usually because DNS was not pointing to the server yet. The site still works, and you can install the certificate yourself in Xagio Cloud.

At the end of deployment you see SSL Warning: “The website was deployed but SSL could not be installed automatically.” The site in the Hosting list shows a warning you can click (“Click for SSL installation instructions”).

Your domain’s DNS A record must already point to the server IP, and the DNS change must have spread. Otherwise Let’s Encrypt validation fails.

  1. On the site in Hosting, click View Site Details & Credentials and copy the Xagio Cloud URL, username and password.
  2. Log in to Xagio Cloud.
  3. From the top menu, click WEB to see the domains on your server.
  4. Hover over your domain and click the Edit (pencil) icon.
  5. Turn on SSL Support, then turn on Let’s Encrypt Support below it.
  6. Click Save.

Xagio Cloud issues and installs the Let’s Encrypt certificate. If it fails, wait for DNS to finish spreading and try again.

If the site uses Cloudflare, also check the SSL/TLS Mode under Cloudflare Settings. Full or Full (Strict) encrypts traffic all the way to your server and needs a certificate on the server. See DNS records and Cloudflare settings.

Turn on SSL Notification in Email notifications to get an email when a connected WordPress site’s certificate has expired.
