Point your domain: DNS steps
When you publish a Studio site, your domain has to point at Xagio hosting before the site can go live. Studio waits for this, then moves the site onto the server and turns on HTTPS by itself. What you do at your registrar depends on the DNS option you chose when publishing.
Option 1: Set it up for me (nameservers)
Section titled “Option 1: Set it up for me (nameservers)”Xagio creates the DNS for your domain in its Cloudflare account. Studio shows two nameservers under Waiting for your nameservers.
- Copy the two nameservers from the publish window.
- Sign in at your domain registrar (where you bought the domain).
- Find the nameserver setting for the domain (often called Nameservers or Custom DNS).
- Replace the existing nameservers with the two from Studio. Remove any others.
- Save at your registrar.
The DNS zone Studio creates holds only the two website records (@ and www). If the domain also runs email or other services, those records need to be added to the new zone, or they stop working when you switch nameservers. See DNS records and Cloudflare settings.
Option 2: I’ll do it myself (records)
Section titled “Option 2: I’ll do it myself (records)”Your DNS stays where it is. Studio shows two records under Waiting for your domain:
| Type | Name | Value |
|---|---|---|
| A | @ |
your server’s IP address |
| A | www |
your server’s IP address |
- Copy the IP address from the publish window.
- Sign in at your registrar or DNS provider.
- Add (or edit) an A record for the root domain (
@) pointing at that IP. - Add (or edit) an A record for
wwwpointing at the same IP. - Remove any other A or AAAA records for
@andwwwthat point somewhere else.
Option 3: Use my own Cloudflare account
Section titled “Option 3: Use my own Cloudflare account”Studio creates the zone and the two A records (@ and www) in your Cloudflare account with your API token, then shows the zone’s two Cloudflare nameservers under Waiting for your nameservers. Set those at your registrar the same way as in Option 1. See Publish with your own Cloudflare account.
How long it takes
Section titled “How long it takes”DNS changes usually show within an hour and can take up to 48 hours. You can close the publish window; Studio keeps checking:
- every 30 seconds for the first 10 minutes,
- every 2 minutes for the rest of the first hour,
- every 15 minutes after that, for up to 3 days.
Click Check again to check right away. The window shows when it last checked.
After 3 days, automatic checks stop and the message changes to “This has taken longer than expected.” Fix the records, then click Check again. Nothing is broken, and the nameservers or records stay on screen.
Change the DNS option
Section titled “Change the DNS option”If Studio couldn’t set up DNS automatically, the publish window shows We couldn’t set up DNS automatically with a Change how DNS is set up link. Click it to go back to the DNS options and pick another one.
Studio sets up HTTPS (SSL) after your domain points to Xagio. You see Setting up the secure connection until it is ready. This can take a while and finishes on its own. There is nothing for you to do. If you need to manage SSL settings later, see SSL for hosted sites.
